A Living History

Soho & the LGBTQ+ Community

1960s

Soho becomes a gathering place for London's nascent LGBTQ+ community, with early bars and clubs opening on Old Compton Street.

1970s

The Gay Liberation Front marches through London. Soho pubs become critical meeting points for the emerging movement.

1980s

The community rallies during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Organisations like THT are born, and Soho becomes a centre of support and solidarity.

1990s

Old Compton Street transforms into the heart of queer London. Iconic venues like The Admiral Duncan and Comptons open their doors.

1999

The Admiral Duncan bombing unites the community in grief and defiance. Soho stands together, stronger than ever.

2000s

Pride in London grows into one of Europe's largest celebrations. Soho's streets become the epicentre of joy, colour, and freedom.

Today

Soho continues to thrive as a beacon of acceptance — where drag shows fill theatres, rainbow flags line the streets, and everyone is welcome.
